Dust Extraction Connection
Why It Is Important to Connect the Pilous Sawmill to a Sawdust Extraction System
During wood cutting with a sawmill, a by-product is generated-wood sawdust. At many sawmills, sawdust is not extracted, but instead accumulates beneath the machine and is only occasionally removed once it significantly obstructs operator movement. Yet sawdust is a material with broad ecological and economic applications-from composting to the production of briquettes, pellets, and particleboard, as well as use as an absorbent for oils and liquids. Consumers who process sawdust further demand low moisture content and high cleanliness. These parameters can only be achieved if the sawdust is extracted directly during cutting by a high-quality extraction system connected to a collection container or silo.
Sawdust extraction is not merely a matter of workplace cleanliness-it has a crucial impact on blade life, cutting speed, accuracy, and cut quality. If sawdust accumulates between the blade and the band wheels, it can create surface irregularities that cause blade vibration. These vibrations reduce both blade stability and cutting precision, even with correct blade tensioning. Although vibration dampers are used, the most effective solution is to eliminate the cause-ensuring efficient sawdust extraction. This significantly increases the productivity of the sawmill and reduces maintenance costs.
The extraction hose is connected to the lower part of the saw arm at the designated sawdust outlet. The connection size is always specified in the operating manual of the specific sawmill model. Extraction system parameters-such as pipe diameter, duct length, and motor power-should be discussed directly with the supplier. A single extraction system can serve multiple sawmills or be integrated into a complete production line.

Maintain the scrapers at a distance of 0.3 - 0.5 mm from the flat rubber belt. This is what a wheel looks like without extraction and with incorrectly adjusted scraper clearance from the flat belt. The photograph clearly shows sawdust lumps that cause blade vibrations.
An extraction system that is not switched on will clog very quickly, and sawdust will fill the saw arm interior within seconds. For this reason, always start the extraction system before starting the sawmill blade.
